Ratsfreischule

In the 1770’s, tuition-free public schools were established in Leipzig by wealthy merchants and publishers. On April 16th, 1792, the first municipal free school was opened between Pleißenburg and Thomaskirche. The school initially comprised three classes, enrolling 171 students aged 7 to 13. Lessons were taught by permanent teachers and university students.
In commemoration of the school, the street where it was located was renamed Ratsfreischulstraße on December 6th, 2000. The Plato-Dolz monument, located at the corner of Ratsfreischulstraße and Dittrichring, honors the first two directors of the school.
