Antikenmuseum University of Leipzig
Team WissensSpuren und Antikenmuseum der Universität Leipzig
The Antikenmuseum of Leipzig University was founded in 1840, making it one of the oldest and most significant collections of Greek and Roman antiquities at German universities. Alongside the sculpture collection of the State Art Collections Dresden, it is now Saxony’s only museum offering comprehensive information on Greek and Roman antiquity. The museum is also deeply integrated into university teaching and research through various collaborative efforts.
Outreach
The publicly accessible teaching and study collection in the Old Nikolai School showcases painted vases, marble sculptures, terracotta figures, clay reliefs, statuettes, and bronze tools, as well as clay lamps and glassware from the Greek and Roman antiquity. The museum also houses a collection of 600 plaster casts of Greek and Roman marble and bronze works from major antiquities museums around the world. Currently, only the display gallery of the Department of Classical Archaeology at Ritterstr. 14 offers a small glimpse into these collection holdings.
